Creativity and Positivity

Studies show that being creative can increase positive affect and flourishing. Flourishing is a term to describe “a state of optimal functioning accompanied by feelings of meaning, engagement, and purpose in life”. People who engage in creative pursuits one day, show an increase in high activation positive affect states such as increased energy, enthusiasm, and excitement and also low activation positive affect states such as feelings of relaxation, calmness, and satisfaction. Being creative one day can even lead to the feeling of improved social relationships the next day!
Everyone can be creative. Encourage your whole family, including yourself, to be creative. Being creative can mean many things. Here are some ideas for being creative everyday…
  • Start a journal to explore writing creatively or even just doodling
  • Get a group of friends or your family together for a night of art
  • Create your own cards to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays
  • Decorate your own cookies or cupcakes for church, school, or even work functions
  • Brainstorm ideas to get your kids excited about doing chores like creating a chore chart with a reward system
  • Create a garden that your kids can help you maintain
  • Schedule a family game night with fun games that encourage creativity. A few examples of games that encourage creativity are Pictionary, Cranium Brain Breaks, Apples to Apples, Tell me a Story Creative Story Cards, or Twister)
